What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of total body mass that is adipose tissue, contrasting with lean mass such as muscle, organs, bone, and water. Unlike BMI, it attempts to describe composition rather than size alone, which matters for athletes, older adults losing muscle, and people with similar weights but different health risk. Measurement methods range from clinical gold-ish standards like DXA to field methods such as skinfolds, bioelectrical impedance (BIA), air displacement, and circumference-based estimates. Each method has bias and day-to-day noise from hydration and glycogen. Healthy ranges differ by sex and age because essential fat and typical storage patterns differ. Tracking direction over months usually beats obsessing over a single reading from a bathroom scale’s impedance pads. Coaches use body-fat percentage to separate “weight loss” from “fat loss,” especially during recomp phases where the scale barely moves while measurements improve. That coaching use case differs from clinical cutoffs for obesity classification.

Formula or method

Body fat % = (fat mass / total body mass) × 100. Field estimates vary: U.S. Navy circumference method uses sex-specific log equations from waist, neck, (hips for women), and height; BIA devices estimate impedance-derived fat; skinfold equations convert calibrated caliper sums into density then fat percentage via Siri or Brozek conversions.

How to interpret it

Rough adult essential-fat floors are often cited near ~2–5% for men and ~10–13% for women, with athletic and fitness ranges higher and still compatible with performance. Elevated body fat, especially visceral fat, associates with insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk even when BMI looks acceptable. Very low body fat can impair hormones, immunity, and menstrual function. Interpret device readings in bands: if two methods disagree by several points, trust trends from the same method under similar conditions (morning, hydrated, not post-workout). Combine with waist-to-height ratio and lab markers rather than chasing a vanity percentage. Men and women should not share vanity targets; hormonal health, bone density, and sport demands set different floors. If performance and labs worsen while chasing a lower percentage, the interpretation is to reverse course.

Limitations

Consumer BIA scales can swing with water, food, and menstrual cycle. Skinfolds depend on technician skill. DXA involves cost and slight radiation exposure and still has assumptions. No consumer method perfectly maps to health outcomes alone. Extreme cutting to hit a number can harm recovery and mental health. Dehydration tricks some athletes into falsely low readings before weigh-ins, which is neither healthy nor reflective of lasting composition change.

Worked example

Using a circumference estimate, a man at 82 kg with estimated 18% body fat has roughly 14.8 kg fat mass and 67.2 kg lean mass. If he loses 4 kg while keeping strength stable and a repeat estimate shows 15% fat, most of the loss was adipose—more informative than weight alone, which could have been water or muscle. Repeating the Navy-method tape measures at the same landmarks two mornings in a row and averaging them reduces single-trial panic when one reading spikes.
