What is Ideal Weight?

Ideal weight is a contested estimate of a body mass thought to align with lower average health risk or aesthetic goals for a given height, sex, and sometimes frame size. Formulas such as Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi originated partly for clinical dosing estimates, not personalized destiny. Modern practice prefers BMI ranges, waist measures, and body-composition context over a single “ideal” number marketed by outdated charts. Still, ideal-weight calculators remain popular starting points for conversations about healthy weight ranges. A better framing is a healthy weight band that preserves menstrual function, strength, labs, and psychological well-being rather than a vanity set-point from a celebrity photo. Pharmacy dosing and anesthesia historically needed IBW equations, which is why Devine-like formulas persist in clinical handbooks even as public health moved toward BMI ranges.

Formula or method

Examples: Devine ideal body weight (IBW) — men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. BMI-based target band: weight = BMI_target × height_m² for BMI 18.5–24.9 (or guideline-adjusted). Always cross-check with WHtR and clinical context.

How to interpret it

If an IBW formula suggests 62 kg but you are a strength athlete at 70 kg with excellent labs and WHtR 0.45, chasing 62 kg may harm performance and hormones. Use ideal-weight outputs as midpoints of a range, then validate with energy levels, strength, and metabolic markers. For underweight individuals, gaining toward a healthier band can be the goal. Pregnancy, adolescence, and eating-disorder history require specialist guidance—not DIY ideal-weight chasing. Prefer slow monthly changes of roughly 0.25–1% body weight when adjusting. Bodybuilders and dancers may reject IBW charts entirely; interpret “ideal” as “healthy functional range” negotiated with performance and labs.

Limitations

Legacy IBW equations ignore muscle mass and ethnicity-specific risk. Aesthetic ideals on social media are not medical targets. Calculators can trigger disordered behaviors in vulnerable users. Never use ideal weight alone to justify extreme restriction. Edited photos create psychological “ideals” no equation should ratify. Edited photos create psychological “ideals” no equation should ratify.

Worked example

Height 5'6" (168 cm) woman: Devine IBW ≈ 45.5 + 2.3×6 ≈ 59.3 kg. BMI healthy band at this height spans roughly 52–70 kg. She currently weighs 74 kg with WHtR 0.53; a first goal might be waist reduction and strength retention toward ~68–70 kg, not an abrupt crash to 59 kg. Setting a first goal at the midpoint between current weight and IBW, not the IBW itself, often improves adherence for larger starting gaps.

FAQ

Which ideal-weight formula is most accurate?

None is universally accurate for health. Devine and relatives are rough clinical heuristics. BMI ranges and waist-based measures better reflect population risk data. Choose a healthy band with a clinician or dietitian if you have medical complexity, and prioritize behaviors over a single formula output. History of eating disorders means ideal-weight tools may be inappropriate without therapist guidance.

Should I aim for the lowest weight in the healthy BMI band?

Not necessarily. The lowest edge can be inappropriate for athletes or people who lose menstrual cycles or strength there. Mid-band weights with good fitness and labs often serve better. Sustainable habits beat the lightest number on a chart. History of eating disorders means ideal-weight tools may be inappropriate without therapist guidance.
